Those who beat the odds deserve praise

WHAT we should when praising students with a string of As is under what conditions the students achieved these excellent results.

Did their whole life revolve around school and attending tuition classes? Or did they do it on their own with only the normal school education?

Did the students take part in extracurricular activities in school and outside school ( e.g. music classes, volunteer work ) and did they have to juggle their time between studies and such activities?

Or, did the students have sick or ailing parents or siblings that they had to care for? Or worse, did they have to contend with abusive parents, or even family disintegration due to separation or divorce?

What about their socio-economic conditions? Compare the situation of students who have everything going for them and who are waited on hand and foot by maids against the many who may not live in plenty, and who have to do household chores and more.

Some even have to help out at their parent's food stalls and the like,to help them eke out a living.

Students who achieve good grades while up against so many other things and without attending extra tuition classes are the ones who truly deserve praise .And to those with good morals and character to boot,I'd say ''Well done !''

They must be given due recognition. They are the ones who should be rightly lauded and rewarded.
